November 1, 2019, marked a significant milestone for Ghana's Sandra Mensimah Owusu, a 17-year-old weightlifter who has been making waves in the male-dominated sport.
Her journey to becoming a weightlifter began when a man she hardly knew discovered her and introduced her to the sport. Initially, she was hesitant, but the man's persistence eventually won her over.
Despite the challenges she faced as a female in a male-dominated sport, Mensimah Owusu joined an all-male team to participate in the 2018 Youth Olympic Games in Buenos Aires, Argentina, making her the only Ghanaian female to represent the country.
Her determination and perseverance have paid off, as she has now represented Ghana at three international weightlifting competitions, including the African Seniors Championship and the African Youth and Junior Championship.
As she continues to inspire young girls to take up weightlifting, Mensimah Owusu's story serves as a testament to the power of hard work and dedication in achieving one's goals.
