On November 1, 2019, a Lebanese court handed down a death sentence to Tariq Samer Howeish, a 30-year-old Uber driver, for the brutal rape and murder of a young British woman in 2017.
The victim's lifeless body was discovered dumped on the side of a road north of Beirut in December 2017.
Notably, Howeish had been arrested twice prior to the murder for alleged harassment and theft, according to judicial sources at the time.
Capital punishment is legal in Lebanon, although no executions have been carried out in 15 years.
