On Wednesday night, first responders in Indiana, USA, received a distress call after a 36-year-old woman, Laura Hurst, was found unresponsive at a home owned by Sheriff Donald Munson.
Medics attempted life-saving measures, but unfortunately, they were unsuccessful, according to CNN.
Police discovered 140 snakes at the home, with approximately 20 belonging to the deceased.
Speaking to the Lafayette Journal and Carrier, Sheriff Munson described the incident as tragic and stated that he would cooperate with the police to investigate the matter further.
The home, which was modified for snake keeping, was reportedly uninhabited.
According to Sergeant Kim Riley of the Indiana State police, the deceased had gone to check on the snakes when she died.
The reticulated python found around Hurst's neck is said to be the longest in the world, originating from Southeast Asia, where it thrives in tropical areas near water.
As reported by National Geographic, there are few documented cases of pythons attacking humans, primarily due to mishandling them as pets.
Pythons have a life expectancy of 25 years and primarily feed on birds and mammals the size of antelopes or smaller.
