Ruto's Stance on BBI Sparks Debate Among Kenyan Leaders ¶
Published on November 1, 2019
Leaders from the camp of Deputy President William Ruto have vowed to follow his stance on the Building Bridges Initiative (BBI), with some expressing concerns about the initiative's intentions.
On October 31, 2019, leaders from the DP Ruto's camp spoke out against the BBI, stating that it was not in the best interest of Kenyans. They claimed that the initiative was a ploy to ensure that the current system of leadership remains in place, thereby preventing President Uhuru Kenyatta from being succeeded by Deputy President Ruto in 2022.
Senator Christopher Lang'at from Bomet County stated, 'The signals being sent by ODM leader Raila Odinga are a clear indication that BBI has a hidden agenda.' He added, 'It is not right to exclude the Deputy President from the process, as it is meant to unite all Kenyans.'
Senator Samson Cherargei from Nandi County also expressed his concerns, stating, 'The report must be beneficial to Kenyans, and not just a means to an end.'
