On a recent visit to a friend's hostel at Chuka University, Hosea Chepkok, a fifth-year nursing student, heard a commotion emanating from the lady's hostel. He rushed to the scene and found a female student in labour, with the baby's head already visible.
With no time to call an ambulance or taxi, Chepkok, who hails from Baringo and had recently completed an internship at Embu Level 5, sprang into action. He rushed to his room to get gloves and assisted the student until she delivered, cut off the umbilical cord, cleaned the baby, and called a taxi to take her to the hospital for further treatment.
According to Chepkok, although he is not currently allowed to perform such tasks alone, the student's case was urgent, and he had to act quickly to prevent complications. He advised women to stick to their birth plans, have a flexible driver, and have cash money and a doctor's contact in case of emergencies.
