Former Kakamega Senator Boni Khalwale's words turned into a poisonous chalice that threatened to choke him during a campaign rally in Kibra for Jubilee Party's Kibra candidate McDonald Mariga.
On November 1, 2019, Khalwale attacked ODM leader Raila Odinga, accusing him of fighting Mariga's political ambitions in Kibra.
According to Khalwale, Odinga was a seasoned politician who had strategized to fight leaders from the Luhya community, including the late Vice President Kijana Wamalwa in the 1997 Ford-Kenya opposition.
However, Khalwale's comments irked the crowd, and they started gesturing that his time on the podium was over and demanded him to step off.
Mariga finally took over the public address and wooed the crowd with his manifesto, promising to uplift the talents of football players, compensate post-election violence victims, and build schools to change the lives of Kibra residents.
As the Kibra by-election approaches on November 7, 2019, Jubilee and ODM are gearing up for their final preparations, with both parties planning to hold mega rallies on the eve of the election.
