On November 1, 2019, Transport Principal Secretary Paul Maringa clarified the pricing of the Nairobi expressway, a project set to stretch from JKIA to Nairobi's Westlands area.
The expressway, estimated to cost Ksh 65 billion and fully sponsored by China Roads and Bridge Company, will be under the Chinese Company's management until 2049 when it will be handed over to the Government of Kenya.
According to Maringa, motorists seeking to use the expressway will be charged Ksh 600 per day, which equates to Ksh 12,000 per month, a figure that critics argue targets the elite class.
”Ksh. 600 a day for five days is Ksh. 3000 and in a month its Ksh 12,000. That’s a bill for someone who can actually afford. Other people, majority of you, can run on matatus,” said Maringa.
The project has been criticized for burdening taxpayers to serve 10% of the population, while majority will be forced to make do with the usually busy Mombasa road.
