Published on November 1, 2019, a tragic incident shook the residents of Ndumberi in Kiambu County when a 21-year-old woman was found dead in her rented house.
The woman, identified as Fidelis Wanja, was believed to have taken her own life due to a relationship gone sour.
According to eyewitnesses, a friend of Wanja's had visited her house multiple times, but received no response. The friend then sought help from a neighbor, Damaris Muoki, who narrated the events leading up to the discovery of Wanja's body.
‘It was around 11am when the friend came to my house to ask if Wanja was in or if she had left. I informed her I had not seen her since the previous night. She then decided to peep through the window and that’s when she saw Wanja’s body dangling from the ceiling and she screamed for help’, Muoki said.
Neighbours responded quickly to the distress call and broke into the house, where they found a note with the words ‘I loved him until I died’. The note was believed to be a reference to Wanja's on-and-off boyfriend, with whom she had recently broken up.
The area chief, Christopher Gathuma, expressed sadness over the incident, stating that young people should seek help rather than resorting to suicide.
The police have launched an investigation into the incident, and Wanja's body was taken to Kiambu Level 5 hospital for a postmortem.
