On November 1, 2019, Nairobi's nightlife scene was dealt a blow with the permanent closure of popular nightclub Space Lounge, located on Ngong Road.
The club's management announced the closure in a statement, citing a court order issued on October 17, 2019, which revoked all their permits and liquor licenses.
According to the statement, the club's management assured its workers that their salaries would be paid by the first week of November, as they bid farewell to their colleagues.
Space Lounge was one of four entertainment joints in Nairobi's Kilimani area ordered to shut down by the Environment and Land Court on Monday, following complaints from residents about noise pollution.
Justice Loise Komingai ruled that the clubs were in contravention of the Environmental Management and Coordination (Noise and Excessive Vibration Pollution) Control Regulations 2009.
Residents, through the Kilimani Project Foundation, had taken the clubs to court, alleging that they infringed on their rights to a clean and healthy environment by playing loud music at night and hosting rowdy revellers.
