Published on November 1, 2019, the concept of flexi hours has gained popularity among employers, but its applicability varies across different industries and professions.

Flexi hours allow employees to determine their work schedule, as long as they meet their productivity targets and maintain their standard of work. This approach has been adopted by various organizations, particularly in the service industry, where employees work in shifts to cater to customers 24/7.

Some companies allow their staff to work from home on agreed days, believing that productivity is not solely dependent on a traditional office setup. Others permit employees to report late and work late or vice versa, as long as they are available for meetings between 10am and 3pm.

However, flexi time may not be suitable for all professions, such as the hospitality industry, where customer-centric operations require a 24-hour presence. In the media industry, consumers are also a top priority, making it challenging to implement flexi hours, especially on weekends and public holidays.

While flexi hours can be beneficial, it is essential to establish strict guidelines and protocols to prevent abuse and ensure the policy works effectively. This includes administrative and security measures, such as ensuring the office is open early and closed late to accommodate different reporting and leaving times.
