As the country's national debt hits Sh6 trillion, the government is turning to Public Private Partnerships to construct major infrastructure, including key roads.

The Jomo Kenyatta International Airport (JKIA)-Westland expressway, set to be the first fully tolled road in the country, will see commuters pay Sh300 for a one-way trip.

However, Transport Principal Secretary Paul Maringa has assured that commuters who cannot afford the toll fee will still be able to use the current Mombasa Road.

"For those who will not be able to afford the amount, the current Mombasa Road will still be an option," Maringa said.

The toll fee will be paid directly to the project constructor, China Road and Bridge Corporation, as a return to investment under the Public Private Partnership agreement.

The JKIA expressway, which will begin from Mlolongo township and end at the James Gichuru junction in Westlands, will be constructed in two phases.

The first phase will involve the construction of four lanes at ground level from Mlolongo to the Eastern Bypass junction, covering 10 kilometers.

The second stretch of tarmac will incorporate six lanes at ground level to the Southern-Bypass Interchange, extending the highway by a further five kilometers.
