Published on November 1, 2019, a Nigerian pastor has been quizzed by authorities in Nairobi over allegations of promoting occultism in the city.

The pastor, who leads a Winners Chapel church, is said to be among several clerics luring vulnerable Kenyans into cultism. At least 10 other foreigners, mostly Nigerians, have been lined up for questioning, with some having been deported after being linked to occult practices.

According to police investigations, deep-rooted occultism has been identified in parts of Nairobi, Embu, Kitui, and Kericho, with individuals exhibiting unusual characteristics or killing for promotion. The probe follows the macabre murder of Catholic priest Fr Michael Kyengo in Embu on October 9.

DCI boss George Kinoti has warned about rising cases of cultism, citing the death of Ferdinand Ongeri, who was found dead in a forest in Nandi with excessive bleeding. Kinoti stated, “Until we proscribe these groups, which remain secrets to us, we have to be proactive for now. Unfortunately, we are now dealing with killings that have happened,”
