On October 31, 2019, Kenya Railways issued a seven-day eviction notice to tenants of Upper Estate in Kisumu, citing deplorable living conditions.
The State Corporation stated that the houses have been in a state of disrepair due to old age and inadequate sanitary facilities, making them uninhabitable.
According to the eviction notice, the estate will be redeveloped into a public market and ancillary services, with the aim of revitalizing the area and creating jobs for local citizens.
Kenya Railways Managing Director Philip Mainga urged tenants to adhere to the 7-day notice, warning that failure to comply would result in forced eviction and takeover of the property.
Mainga also stated that Kenya Railways would not be liable for any loss or damage resulting from the eviction.
Residents of Upper Estate have been given until November 7, 2019, to vacate their homes and make way for the redevelopment project.
