On October 31, 2019, a devastating matatu accident occurred along the Njoro-Mau Narok road, claiming the lives of four people.
According to Njoro Sub County Police Commander Mohammed Huka, the accident happened when the matatu, heading to Njoro town, knocked down a two-and-a-half-year-old child who was crossing the road.
"A child aged two and a half years was crossing the road when the matatu which was heading to Njoro town knocked him down. The driver lost control of the vehicle which rolled severally injuring other passengers on board," said Huka.
Three passengers succumbed to their injuries while being rushed to the hospital, while four others suffered serious injuries and were taken to a private hospital in Njoro town.
Area MCA George Kiere, who was among the first responders, stated that the driver saw the child while he was too close, causing the accident.
"It appeared as if the driver had not noticed the child who was crossing the road alone. He tried to avoid hitting the child but he was too close. The vehicle swerved and hit the child before rolling," said Kiere.
