On October 31, 2019, a devastating matatu accident occurred along the Njoro-Mau Narok road, claiming the lives of four people.

According to Njoro Sub County Police Commander Mohammed Huka, the accident happened after the matatu knocked down a two-and-a-half-year-old child who was crossing the road.

"A child aged two and a half years was crossing the road when the matatu which was heading to Njoro town knocked him down," Huka said, adding that the driver lost control of the vehicle, which rolled, injuring other passengers on board.

The child died on the spot, while three passengers succumbed to their injuries while being rushed to the hospital. Four other adults suffered serious injuries and were being attended to at a private hospital in Njoro town.

"The driver is critically injured alongside three other passengers who have been taken to Newpoint Hospital in Njoro," Huka said, adding that investigations into the matter have been launched.

Area MCA George Kiere also commented on the incident, stating that it appeared the driver had not noticed the child crossing the road alone and tried to avoid hitting him but was too close, causing the vehicle to swerve and roll.
