On October 31, 2019, Kenya Rugby Union (KRU) faced a financial crisis when auctioneers attached the organization's property in Nairobi.
The auctioneers, representing a client seeking to recover a Sh4 million debt, carted away property worth millions of shillings from the KRU secretariat.
According to KRU chairman Gangla Oduor, the debt had ballooned to Sh10 million after additional charges, including legal fees and interests, were added.
The debt accumulated for services rendered to the men's national sevens rugby team in its preparations for international assignments.
"It is an old debt. The incident is unfortunate, but there is nothing we could do," said Oduor.
The KRU had held a fundraiser for their upcoming assignments, but the government failed to provide support despite a promise from Sports CS Amina Mohamed that everything would be fine.
