Construction of the Nairobi Expressway, a 27-kilometre dual carriageway, was launched by President Uhuru Kenyatta on October 16, 2019. The project was set to run from Mlolongo to James Gichuru Junction in Westlands.

However, the initial design sparked public uproar as it planned to take up land from Uhuru Park for construction of exit and entry ramps. In response, the government has revised the design to ensure no land is taken from the park.

Transport CS James Macharia announced the revised design in a statement issued on Wednesday, October 30, 2019. He stated that the design has been optimised to preserve Uhuru Park, which is an important public park and one of the remaining green areas within Nairobi CBD.

According to CS Macharia, an elaborate Traffic Management Plan will be put in place to ensure safety and minimal disruption to road users during construction. The existing A8 Road will remain open, and the contractor will work on the median.

CS Macharia added that the Traffic Management Plan will be continuously reviewed and improved during the construction period to ensure safety and improved road user experience.
