On October 31st, 2019, Sportpesa employees received an email from the firm's head of human resources, Terry Wanja Njagi, asking them to report to the company's office at Chancery Building on Valley Road, Nairobi on Friday, November 1st.
The email, addressed to 'all', mentioned the 'Withdrawal of termination notices dated 2nd October, 2019' and 'Tomorrow at 11am [we will communicate the] next steps' as agendas.
Just days prior, on October 2nd, Sportpesa announced that it was retrenching its 400-plus employees after a long battle with the Kenya Revenue Authority over unpaid taxes, amounting to Ksh14.9 billion.
However, SportPesa CEO, Captain Ronald Karauri, refuted the claim, stating it was impossible to continue paying salaries.
As employees report to the office, speculation is rife that Sportpesa may be returning to business.
