On October 31, 2019, Betway, a sports betting company, launched a two-day medical camp for community-based football teams in Nairobi, Kenya. The camp, which is being held at Dandora Stadium, seeks to equip teams with on-field medical care skills.
Among the teams set to benefit from the initiative is Hakati Sportiff, a community-based club in Makadara. The team lost a player in October 2017 due to a lack of proper on-field medical attention.
According to Betway country manager Leon Kiptum, the company reached the decision to launch the medical camp after identifying a gap in the sports scene. The camp will provide teams with training equipment, including balls and bibs.
"Due to financial constraints and other factors outside of their control, some teams lack basic healthcare knowledge and often do not have access to suitable medical training or medical facilities," Betway said in a statement.
"These concerns caught the attention of Betway who, in keeping with their commitment to football, set up the medical training camp to better prepare the sides for medical emergencies," the statement continued.
