Kenya's Inflation Hits 4.95% in October, Food Prices Rise

Kenya's year-on-year inflation rate hit 4.95% in October, according to the Kenya National Bureau of Statistics (KNBS). This marks a significant increase from the 3.83% recorded in September.

The food and non-alcoholic beverages index rose by 0.48% compared to September and was up 8.74% compared to October 2018. The index carries a 36.04% weight in the basket of goods used to measure inflation.

On a monthly basis, inflation was 0.28% from -0.11% in September, KNBS said in a statement. The benchmark lending rate was left unchanged at 9.0% for the seventh straight meeting, with policymakers citing well-anchored inflation expectations.

Published on October 31, 2019, the data highlights the ongoing challenges faced by Kenyans in managing the cost of living.
