On October 31, 2019, Kisumu Human Rights Defenders through Kondele Community Social Justice issued a press statement exposing the Kisumu Police Commander for allegedly orchestrating violence against activists.
The group accused the commander of negatively profiling Audi Ogada, a human rights defender, and accused him of making malicious accusations against Kisumu Policemen.
Activists claim that the police have created a volatile environment by profiling and suspiciously prosecuting human rights defenders using fabricated charges.
According to the activists, police officers' laxity in resolving active cases, providing security to activists, and criminalizing human rights activism has led to a rise in police brutality.
Recently, two police officers were arrested in connection with theft in Eastleigh, further highlighting the corruption within the police force.
