On October 16, 2019, President Uhuru Kenyatta launched the construction of the Nairobi Expressway, a 27-kilometer dual carriageway from Mlolongo to James Gichuru Junction in Westlands.

However, the project's original design sparked controversy as it was set to take up land from Uhuru Park for the construction of exit and entry ramps.

Transport CS James Macharia has now announced that the design has been optimized to ensure no land will be taken from the park.

"We all recognize that Uhuru Park is an important public park and one of the remaining green areas within Nairobi CBD that needs to be preserved for posterity," CS Macharia stated.

According to CS Macharia, an elaborate Traffic Management Plan will be put in place to ensure safety and minimal disruption to road users during construction.

The existing A8 Road will remain open, and the contractor will work on the median.

CS Macharia emphasized that the Traffic Management Plan will be continuously reviewed and improved during the construction period to ensure safety and improved road user experience.
