On October 31, 2019, Embu University students took to the streets in protest over a proposed fee increment.

According to the students, the institution was planning to increase fees from Ksh. 16,000 to Ksh 48,000, making it unaffordable for them.

They also alleged that the exam retake fee would be increased, which they claimed would further burden them.

A meeting between the university management and student leaders failed to yield an agreement, prompting the students to take drastic action.

They barricaded the road outside the school entrance, prompting police to intervene.

Police used teargas to disperse the students, who were reportedly stoning motor vehicles along the Embu-Meru highway and into Kangaru village.

The students vowed to continue their demonstrations until their grievances were addressed.
