Heavy rains have caused widespread destruction and loss of life in the Coast region, with three people confirmed dead in Taita Taveta County.

According to reports, one person died after being swept away by floods in Voi Sub-County. The body of the middle-aged man was discovered along the Voi River on Tuesday.

The man, a trader at the Voi market, is suspected to have tried crossing the river on Saturday night while returning home from work.

Police have launched investigations into the incident, and the body was taken to Moi County Referral Hospital mortuary in Voi.

Elsewhere, a nine-year-old boy died after being swept away by floods in Njoro, Taveta Sub-County. The boy was pronounced dead at Taveta Sub-County Hospital after being rescued from the raging waters.

Additionally, a Class Seven pupil drowned while swimming in a water pan in Kamtonga village, Mwatate Sub-County. The incident occurred when the child, together with two other children, had taken their cows to drink water.

Weather forecasters have warned of flash floods in low-lying areas, particularly in Mombasa, where 106mm of rainfall has been reported. The County Director of Meteorology, Edward Ngure, has warned of heavy morning showers and thunderstorms in the coming week.

Strong winds off the shore are also expected, which may result in storm surges in the Indian Ocean. Fishermen, beachgoers, and players in the marine industry have been advised to be on high alert.
