On Wednesday, Homa Bay Governor Cyprian Awiti announced his return to work after several months of temporary blindness.
He attributed his recovery to divine intervention, saying, 'I lost my sight but God has given it back to me. I thank everyone who prayed for me.'
Awiti had been on medical leave since 2018, undergoing treatment in foreign countries including Germany after losing his eyesight following a cornea transplant.
During his absence, Deputy Governor Hamilton Orata and County Secretary Isaiah Ogwe took over, facing pressure from local leaders who questioned their ability to run the county.
Addressing concerns about his ability to work with his condition, Awiti assured supporters that he would serve in full capacity, saying, 'I know I have been criticised by many people but what I know is that whoever is criticised is the one who works.'
He also accused members of his cabinet of leaking confidential information, stating, 'Some of you who go spilling what we talk about in our cabinet meetings to the world. These things are meant to end internally.'
Awiti directed the trade department to complete the Kigoto maize mill factory and instructed Finance executive Nicholas Koriko to settle all pending bills and pay contractors who have completed their jobs.
He expressed his desire to leave a good legacy in Homa Bay, asking for residents' support in fulfilling his campaign promises.
