For centuries, various cultures have harnessed the medicinal properties of mushrooms, and recent studies have revealed their potential benefits for cancer patients.

According to a study published in the Experimental Biology and Medicine journal on October 31, 2019, five types of mushrooms - portabella, oyster, white button, crimini, and maitake - were found to suppress the growth of breast cancer cells and their reproduction.

Shiitake mushrooms, in particular, contain lentinan, a sugar molecule that has been shown to extend the survival rate of patients with certain types of cancers when used during chemotherapy.

Additionally, a study conducted at Penn State found that mushrooms are rich in antioxidants, such as glutathione and ergothioneine, which have anti-aging properties.

Reishi mushrooms have been found to have anti-inflammatory effects, and several studies have demonstrated their potential in reducing tumor growth, fighting diseases, suppressing allergic reactions, and lowering inflammation.

Furthermore, mushrooms are a rich source of vitamins B and D, with crimini and button mushrooms being particularly high in vitamin D.

These vitamins are essential for maintaining healthy bones and energy levels, and mushrooms are also cholesterol-free, making them an excellent addition to a healthy diet.

Moreover, mushrooms have been found to lower cholesterol levels by containing beta-glucan and chitin, which are cholesterol-lowering fibers.

According to Josh Axe, a bestselling author and nutritionist, mushrooms contain phytonutrients that prevent cells from sticking to blood vessel walls, maintaining healthy blood pressure and improving blood circulation.

Lastly, mushrooms have been found to boost the immune system, with lentinan and beta-glucan working together to enhance the body's natural defenses.
