Four years after medical kits were shipped into the country, a Senate committee has revealed that they have not been tested for safety, raising concerns for Kenyans seeking treatment for ailments like cancer and diabetes.
According to the Poisons and Pharmacy Board (PPB) director of evaluation Ahmed Mohammed, the kits have not been tested due to a lack of experts and laboratories.
Under the Pharmacy and Poisons Act of 2012, the board is required to test locally manufactured or imported drugs and equipment to determine if they are safe for use in the country.
Mr. Mohammed acknowledged that the board has only listed the kits, a process that does not test the safety of equipment for use.
"Yes, we are supposed to test the equipment but we have not done it. At the moment, the board does not have the experts," he said.
