Published on October 31, 2019, the Kibra by-election is just around the corner, with the Independent Electoral and Boundaries Commission (IEBC) taking steps to ensure a smooth voting process.
Returning Officer Beatrice Muli announced that six polling centres have been relocated to avoid interfering with the KCSE national examinations, which are currently underway. The affected centres include Raila Education Centre, Upper Hill High School, Mbagathi Road Primary School, Shadrack Kimalel, Olympic primary and secondary schools, and Mbagathi Road Primary School.
The relocated polling stations are now situated at Old Kibera Primary School, Kilimanjaro Avenue off Mara Road, Kenyatta Market parking lot, Golf Course estate playing ground, and Ayany Primary School. The IEBC has taken the additional step of informing voters of the relocation by putting up banners at the new polling stations.
Ms Muli also revealed that the number of polling stations has increased from 180 to 183 due to an increase in the number of voters. According to her, there have been 383 new voters in Kibra since 2017, with 333 being new registrations and 50 requesting transfers. The mini-poll is scheduled to take place on November 7 and will be overseen by 188 presiding officers and 625 clerks.
