On October 31, 2019, the National Environment Management Authority (NEMA) took a crucial step to protect Lake Victoria by closing down the main slaughterhouse in Homa Bay town.

The abattoir, which serves hundreds of butcheries in the town and neighboring urban centers, was shut down due to its blatant disregard for environmental regulations.

According to a letter from acting NEMA Director General Mamo B Mamo to Homa Bay County Secretary Isiah Ogwe, the slaughterhouse was closed until all measures were put in place to prevent the infiltration of waste into the lake.

Mr. Mamo also directed that all waste illegally dumped in the area be cleaned up and disposed of within seven days.

Furthermore, he instructed the county veterinary officer to stop undertaking meat inspection at the facility.
