Liverpool vs Arsenal: Reds Edge Gunners in Thrilling Penalty Shootout ¶
On October 31, 2019, Liverpool and Arsenal clashed in a highly anticipated Carabao Cup match. The game ended in a thrilling 5-5 draw, with Liverpool ultimately emerging victorious in a penalty shootout, winning 5-4.
The match began with Liverpool taking the lead just six minutes in, as Shkodran Mustafi turned Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain's cross into his own net. However, Arsenal responded in the 19th minute through Lucas Torreira, who pounced on a rebounded shot by Bukayo Saka to level the score.
Gabriel Martinelli put Arsenal in front for the first time in the 25th minute, capitalizing on a shot that fell kindly into his path. Martinelli completed his brace in the 36th minute, slamming a low cross from Saka into the net to make it 3-1.
James Milner made it 3-2 from a spot-kick two minutes before half time, and Arsenal went into the break with a one-goal advantage. The Gunners picked up from where they left off in the second half, with Milner making a poor back-pass to the goalkeeper before Ainsley Maitland-Niles took advantage to make it 4-2.
Liverpool did not give up, however, as Oxlade-Chamberlain pulled out something special from 25-yards to put the score at 4-3. Divock Origi completed the comeback with a lovely turn in front of the 18-yard area to send his shot past the keeper and make it 4-4 in the 62nd minute.
Willock put Arsenal back in front with a fantastic strike, but Origi equalized in the fourth minute of added time, volleying home a low cross from Neco Williams to send the match into penalties.
Dani Ceballos missed Arsenal's spot-kick, and Curtis Jones scored the winning penalty to send the Reds into the quarterfinals in an extraordinary night.
