On October 30, 2019, President Uhuru Kenyatta officially handed over a petition to dissolve the Taita Taveta County Government to the Independent Electoral and Boundaries Commission (IEBC).
The petition, initiated by Governor Granton Samboja, was sent to IEBC to verify the signatures of voters supporting the petition. The move comes after Samboja disagreed with the Members of the County Assembly (MCAs) on the Ksh 5.6 billion budget for the 2019/20 financial year.
IEBC Chairperson Wafula Chebukati stated that they will verify the signatures in the petition over the next 5 days before giving a report. The commission will scrutinize details of the signatories to establish if they correspond with those in the register of voters.
According to the Principal Administrative Secretary in the office of the President, Kennedy Kihara, the petition will be successful if it receives 10 per cent of 150 thousand registered voters in Taita Taveta County.
