Sanlam Kenya has invested in the development of financial journalism in Kenya by sponsoring a journalist to attend the prestigious Sanlam Summer School for Financial Journalists. The 17th edition of the summer school, which took place from November 10-16, 2019, in Johannesburg, South Africa, was attended by 27 journalists from different newsrooms in Africa, including Betty Njeru, a sub-editor at the Standard Group PLC.
Sanlam Kenya's Group Chief Executive Officer, Dr. Patrick Tumbo, emphasized the importance of training financial journalists to increase their capacity to report on corporate governance, a critical aspect of businesses worldwide. He noted that the media landscape has undergone significant changes due to digitalization, requiring journalists to work faster and deliver content for multiple platforms while maintaining quality and depth in their reporting.
Sanlam Kenya has been participating in the Sanlam Summer School for Financial Journalists since 2016, having trained three other journalists prior to Betty Njeru's selection. The programme, established in 2003, boasts an impressive 490 successful alumni.
During her training, Betty Njeru met with Dr. Patrick Tumbo at Sanlam Tower in Nairobi for an official send-off. The Sanlam Summer School for Financial Journalists is a one-week training programme designed for emerging journalists with three years or less work experience in reporting on business and finance.
