Rogue Police Officer Impersonating DCI Kinoti Released on Ksh. 500,000 Bail ¶
On October 28, 2019, DCI George Kinoti sent a rogue police officer, Corporal Omondi Gangire, on compulsory leave. The officer had been attached to the Ruiru DCI office and was using Kinoti's name to extort money from the public.
On October 29, 2019, Corporal Gangire was arraigned before Principal Magistrate Johnstone Munguti at Kitui magistrates court. He was charged alongside a civilian with the offence of impersonation.
The two suspects denied the charges and were each released on a Ksh 500,000 cash bail. According to the head of the Special Crime Prevention Unit, Pius Gitari, the officer and his civilian friend had been collecting money from unsuspecting members of the public while posing as Kinoti's agents.
Gitari directed Kenyans who had lost money in the scheme to report to DCI headquarters or any police station.
