Ekuru Aukot, leader of the Third Way Alliance, has announced plans to take over as the country's official opposition leader following the failure of his Punguza Mizigo Initiative.
Just days after his initiative flopped, Aukot declared that the Punguza Mizigo team will be transformed into a formidable political force to keep President Uhuru Kenyatta and his government in check.
Aukot's change of heart comes after he previously congratulated President Uhuru and the Jubilee government for winning the repeat elections held on October 26, 2017.
However, Aukot has since taken issue with everything President Uhuru Kenyatta has laid his hands on, including the Building Bridges Initiative (BBI).
“That BBI is a confusion, directionless, duplicitous of functions and a waste of money. If I had that Sh10 billion given to them I would build proper classrooms… It is an agreement between two individuals and does not represent 46 million Kenyans,” Aukot said during an appearance on a local station.
He also criticized the BBI for not seeking the views of Kenyans to amend the Constitution, saying, “I think Uhuru sympathised so much with Raila that he decided to give him a political gift of campaigning for 2022, because… how come out of the nine points none them says go collect views to seek to amend the Constitution,”
Furthermore, Aukot stated, “Nobody has a monopoly of ideas of how this country can be changed, we are all thinkers. People who think that change in this country can come through them are mistaken. Wanjiku has awakened and will take over this country very soon,”
With his declaration, it remains to be seen if Aukot will truly match his words with action.
