On October 30, 2019, the National Fund for the Disabled of Kenya (NFDK) received a significant donation from technology firm Huawei. The company handed over 140 tablets worth Sh2.2 million to support learners with special needs.
According to Kristina Pratt, Chairperson of the NFDK's board, the tablets will be used to digitally improve the learning experience of learners with special needs. This donation aligns with the government's agenda of providing digital kits to schools, aimed at equipping learners in the era of technology.
Ms. Pratt expressed gratitude for the gesture by Huawei, stating that it will go a long way in empowering persons with disabilities. She also hoped that it would not be a one-off donation.
Adam Lane, Huawei Kenya's senior director for public affairs, explained that the tablets come with customised software and applications to suit users with different disabilities. He also mentioned that Huawei is conducting skills training programs with its local partners and will work together with the NFDK to ensure proper utilisation of the tablets.
Mr. Lane hailed NFDK as the perfect partner for Huawei's community programs in Kenya, which aim to use technology to improve the lives of persons with disabilities. Huawei has launched its 'TECH4ALL' initiative, which aims to help 500 million people benefit from digital technology in the next five years.
