On Tuesday, a frightening incident unfolded at the Likoni Channel in Mombasa, where a ferry was traveling. A passenger's phone suddenly burst into flames, sending dozens of commuters scrambling for safety.
The incident occurred on the MV Harambee ferry, operated by the Kenya Ferry Service (KFS). According to KFS, the phone's faulty battery ignited when the owner, Salim Kamanza, attempted to open the cover.
Fortunately, no serious injuries were reported, although Kamanza sustained minor bruises on his left arm. The ferry staff and police on board responded quickly to the situation, with the passenger throwing the phone into the water as others raised the alarm.
The incident serves as a stark reminder of the dangers that can arise on public transportation. It comes just a month after a tragic incident at the same ferry channel, where a car slipped off and drowned, claiming the lives of Mariam Kighenda and her daughter.
