On October 29, 2019, a chaotic scene unfolded at the Likoni Channel in Mombasa as a ferry passenger's phone suddenly burst into flames.
According to the Kenya Ferry Service (KFS), the phone's faulty battery ignited when the owner, Salim Kamanza, attempted to open the cover.
Fortunately, the quick-thinking passenger threw the phone into the water, averting a potentially disastrous situation.
Passengers and ferry staff responded promptly, and no serious injuries were reported, although the victim sustained minor bruises on the left arm.
The incident occurred just a month after a tragic accident at the same ferry channel, where a car slipped off and drowned, claiming the lives of Mariam Kighenda and her daughter.
