On the first day of the national KCPE exams, a candidate from Kapyego Primary school in Elgeyo Marakwet County gave birth after developing labour pains during her maths test on Tuesday.

She was rushed to the neighbouring Kapyego health centre where she continued with the test before successfully delivering her baby late in the afternoon.

Marakwet East sub-county Director of Education Kimutai Chrichir said the girl gave birth after writing her English composition test.

"We made arrangements to ensure she sits all her papers and took her to the nearby health centre," Mr Chirchir said.

Elsewhere, three KCSE candidates from Narok, Bomet and Nakuru counties gave birth hours to the start of the examinations.
