Published on October 30, 2019, Joey Ghose, a seasoned rally driver from Oman, is set to return to Kenya for the 2019 Safaricom East African Safari Classic Rally.
At 57, Ghose has a storied history in rallying, having left Kenya in 1994 to settle in Oman. He was a well-known driver and navigator in the Kenya National Rally Championship series during his prime.
Today, Ghose is involved in various businesses, including cement manufacturing, but his passion for rallying remains unquenched.
"These days I'm doing various businesses, but the main one is cement manufacturing," Ghose told Nation Sport from Oman.
For the Safari Classic Rally, Ghose will be driving a Nissan 240RS, which he acquired from New Zealand and had built by Grant Shand of RallyXtreme UK.
With a rich history in rallying, Ghose started his career in 1979 as a driver in a Datsun 1600sss, competing in training rallies in Kenya and later progressing to the Raymonds Rally of Eldoret.
However, his stint as a driver was short-lived, as he suffered three consecutive rolls and ran out of funds in 1982.
Undeterred, Ghose turned to navigation from 1986 to 1990, working with Bipin Tailor and Sanjay Dey, respectively.
This will be Ghose's fourth Safari Classic Rally, although he has yet to finish any of the events.
