This archive report was first published on 30 October 2019.

On October 30, 2019, the war against drug trafficking in Kenya was gaining momentum. Driven by greed, drug traffickers were determined to continue profiting from their illicit trade, despite the risks of arrest, prosecution, and jail.

According to reports, the traffickers were ferrying and making deadly substances available to consumers, ruining lives and becoming merchants of death in the process. The authorities were commended for upping their game in the fight against drug trafficking, but the traffickers were adapting and evolving their tactics to evade detection.

Police officers deployed to mount checks on highways were praised for breaking up smuggling rings and discovering new tricks devised by the traffickers. In the past six months, bhang worth an estimated Sh9 million had been netted by police in two counties in the southwestern region alone.

As the authorities intensify surveillance and checks, it is clear that the war against drug trafficking is far from over. The traffickers will continue to adapt and evolve, but with determination and vigilance, the authorities can stay one step ahead.
