On October 29, 2019, Kenya Power unveiled Bernard Ngugi as its new Managing Director and CEO, but the fate of former Acting Managing Director Jared Othieno remained uncertain.

According to Board Chairman Ambassador Mahboub Maalim, Othieno was absent from the event due to illness, but the utility firm's updated senior management team list on its website did not provide clarity on his future at the firm.

When contacted by Citizen Digital about his role, Othieno remained non-committal, stating, 'I will not comment about that.'

However, sources within Kenya Power suggested that Othieno would resume his position as Acting Manager, Street Lighting, a role he held prior to his appointment as Acting Managing Director.

With over 30 years of experience at the firm, Othieno was appointed in July 2018 following a graft purge that led to the departure of MD Ken Tarus and several senior managers.

Tarus and his predecessor were charged with importing faulty transformers that cost taxpayers millions of shillings, a case that is still pending in court.

Ngugi, the new Managing Director, has expressed his focus on returning the firm to a profitable path, a goal that becomes increasingly challenging given the company's recent profit warning in September 2019.
