On Tuesday, Cheki Kenya held the inaugural Cheki Car Awards at The Den, dusitD2 hotel, in Nairobi, to recognize the most preferred cars in Kenya.
The awards, which aimed to enlighten Kenyans on car specifications, were built around 11 categories with 5 nominees in each. A survey was sent to 300,000 car enthusiasts, and 12,000 votes were collected from the general public, car dealers, and expert automotive writers.
According to Cheki Kenya CEO Resian Leteipan, the survey aimed to help first-time car owners make informed decisions by highlighting the similarities between different car makes within specific categories.
The judging panel consisted of Trevor Lamenya, JM Baraza, Betty Kyalo, Bobby Mwirigi, and Leonie Elverfeldt.
Toyota Kenya emerged as the top winner, followed closely by DT Dobie. The winners in each category were:
- Car of the year – Toyota Land Cruiser (Toyota Kenya)
- Best budget car – Mazda Demio (CMC Motors)
- Best family car – Toyota Alphard (Toyota Kenya)
- Best SUV car – Range Rover Sport (Inchcape)
- Best hatchback car – Volkswagen Golf (DT Dobie)
- Best city car – Honda Fit (Honda)
- Best luxury car – Mercedes S350 (DT Dobie)
- Best High performance car – Subaru Impreza STI (Subaru Kenya)
- Best commercial car – Isuzu N-series (General Motors)
- Best motorbike – Honda CBR (Honda Kenya)
- Best used car dealership – Motorhub
- Best new car dealership – DT Dobie
