Arsenal Captaincy: Unai Emery Hints Mesut Ozil Could Replace Granit Xhaka ¶
October 30, 2019
Arsenal boss Unai Emery has hinted that Mesut Ozil could replace Granit Xhaka as the team's captain, following Xhaka's clash with fans during a recent match.
Emery's comments come just two days after Xhaka was involved in an ugly confrontation with Arsenal fans during a 2-2 draw against Crystal Palace.
According to reports, Xhaka was substituted in the second half of the match, with Bukayo Saka being introduced in his place. The substitution was met with jeers and boos from the Arsenal faithful, who expressed their displeasure with Xhaka's performance.
Emery has since hinted that Ozil could assume the captaincy role to replace Xhaka, who he claims is 'devastated, sad and very down.'
Emery confirmed that Ozil will be part of the squad to take on Liverpool in the Carabao Cup on Wednesday, October 30.
When asked if Ozil could get the captain's armband, Emery replied, 'It depends. He could be yes.'
Ozil has largely been overlooked by Emery, with the German midfielder being limited to just two appearances this season.
Emery's comments have sparked speculation that Ozil could be in line to replace Xhaka as the team's captain.
