Kenya Revenue Authority officials are cracking down on illicit trade, but one of their own is on the run after being linked to uncustomed cigarettes worth Ksh.10 million.
According to the Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI), the official fled with an Administration Police Service officer after they were intercepted by detectives on October 29, 2019.
“Further investigations are ongoing including search for KRA official and APS Kenya officer believed to have been escorting the lorry and escaped after they were intercepted by DCI detectives,” a tweet from the Directorate of Criminal Investigations reads.
Two other suspects, Moses Waweru and Josephat Kamau, were arrested in Uasin Gishu and arraigned in court on Monday after they were found with the Supermarch cigarettes labeled ‘For Export’.
The cigarettes were found hidden inside a compartment of a Mitsubishi Lorry, and DCI detectives established that the cigarettes did not have requisite KRA stamps.
Just last month, KRA destroyed contraband worth Ksh.1.5 billion in a crackdown on illicit trade.
