As the Premier League season hits its midpoint, Manchester United finds themselves 15 points behind league leaders Liverpool, with a mixed run of form that has seen them collect just three wins from 10 matches.
However, their 1-1 draw against Liverpool on October 20, 2019, appears to have rejuvenated the side, with two wins on the road, including a 3-1 victory over Norwich City at the weekend.
Despite this, the Red Devils still look less incisive in front of goal and less creative in the midfield, a problem that can be attributed to a raft of injuries that has left key players sidelined, including Paul Pogba and Anthony Martial.
With the January transfer window approaching, TUKO.co.ke takes a look at some short-term options Man United can explore:
5. Mario Mandzukic ¶
Juventus forward Mario Mandzukic has been widely linked with a switch to Old Trafford, with reports suggesting a deal could be reached in January.
Mandzukic could be a solid short-term signing for Man United owing to his proficiency in front of goal.
4. Ever Banega ¶
Sevilla midfielder Ever Banega could come in as a solution for Juan Mata, who appears to have lost his spark in the midfield.
At 31, the Argentine can still manage to add extra creativity in their midfield that has been lacking in Pogba's absence.
3. Dries Mertens ¶
Napoli striker Dries Mertens' future at the Italian club was thrown into uncertainty back in September after contract talks stalled.
The prolific striker is already understood to have attracted interest from MLS and Chinese Super League clubs.
2. Luka Modric ¶
Real Madrid midfielder Luka Modric is perhaps the unlikeliest transfer in the list, but at 34-years-old, his time at the top is coming to a close.
As such, he would fancy a new challenge in the Premier League as his career hits the homestretch and might offer the Red Devils a season or two in a supporting role.
1. Zlatan Ibrahimovic ¶
LA Galaxy striker Zlatan Ibrahimovic has scored an astonishing 52 goals in 56 appearances in the MLS, and a possible return to United has already been mooted for the goalscoring sensation.
He would therefore offer the much-needed relief for Rashford and Anthony Martial.
