On Monday, the Kenyatta University Hospital was officially opened, marking a significant milestone in Kenya's healthcare sector.

The hospital, which has a 650-bed capacity, will initially operate with 150 beds, focusing on cancer treatment and renal healthcare.

Health Cabinet Secretary Sicily Kariuki inspected the hospital last week, accompanied by the hospital board chair Prof Olive Migunda and CEO Dr. Andrew Toro.

According to CS Kariuki, the hospital will be a 100% referral facility, with 40 doctors and over 100 medical staff on call.

"We are sensitizing the surrounding community that this will not be a walk-in and walk-out facility," she said.

The hospital will provide a range of services, including emergency, cardiology, laboratory, gynecology, and oncology services, as well as pediatric, surgical, and funeral home services.

Despite the delay in opening, which was initially scheduled for August, the hospital is now ready to admit patients, with the CS noting that the delay was inevitable due to equipment testing and staff hiring.
