On October 29, 2019, the High Court issued an order halting President Uhuru Kenyatta's plan to cut the Judiciary's budget.

The court's decision came after the Law Society of Kenya (LSK) filed a case challenging the budget cut, which was intended to raise funds for President Kenyatta's Big Four agenda.

According to the court order, National Treasury Cabinet Secretary Ukur Yattani must release funds allocated by the National Assembly immediately.

The Judiciary had requested Sh31.2 billion, but Parliament allocated it Sh14.5 billion, which the National Treasury then slashed to Sh11.5 billion.

Justice James Makau directed the Judicial Service Commission (JSC) to provide a detailed report on how the proposed budget cut would affect access and administration of justice.
