On October 29, 2019, the Independent Electoral and Boundaries Commission (IEBC) announced the relocation of 36 polling stations in Kibra constituency due to the ongoing Kenya National Examinations – KCPE and KCSE.
According to a Special Gazette Notice published by IEBC, Chairman Wafula Chebukati stated that the polling centers had been displaced to ensure a smooth examination process.
Old Kibera Primary School, where former Prime Minister Raila Odinga voted during the 2017 General Election, is one of the affected polling stations. A total of 2,959 voters from this station have been reassigned to the Raila Educational Center.
The displacement has also affected voters registered at Ayany Primary School Playing Field and Golf Course Playing Grounds. A total of 13,913 voters from 2 Ayany Primary School Playing Field polling stations have been relocated to Olympic Primary School and Olympic Secondary School, while 3,549 voters from Golf Course Playing Grounds have been relocated to Shadrack Kimalel Primary.
ODM had demanded that IEBC publish the official voter register, which prompted the commission to disclose that Kibra has 118,658 voters eligible to vote on the November 7 by-election.
The front-runners in the upcoming election are ODM candidate Imran Okoth, Jubilee’s McDonald Mariga, and Ford Kenya’s Eliud Owalo.
