Disney's 'Maleficent: Mistress of Evil' has claimed the top spot at the North American box office, taking in $19.4 million over the weekend, according to Exhibitor Relations.

Released on October 18, 2019, the film is a sequel to the 2014 live-action hit and stars Angelina Jolie as the evil sorceress Maleficent. Michelle Pfeiffer joins the cast as Queen Ingrith in this installment.

For the second consecutive weekend, 'Maleficent: Mistress of Evil' held off Warner Bros.' 'Joker', which managed $19.2 million for the Friday-to-Sunday period to finish a narrow second. 'Joker', starring Joaquin Phoenix, has now taken approximately $850 million globally, becoming the most successful R-rated movie in history, according to Variety.

With Halloween just around the corner, scary movies performed well overall. 'The Addams Family' from United Artists took third spot with $12 million, while 'Zombieland: Double Tap' from Sony placed fourth with $11.8 million in its second week out.

Other top performers included 'Countdown', a low-budget horror film from STX films, which placed fifth with $8.9 million, and 'Black and Blue', which rounded out the top 10 with $8.4 million.
