On October 20, 2019, Prof Nazir Mohamed Aiad, secretary-general of the Islamic Research Academy, delivered a public lecture in Nairobi titled 'The Moderation of Islam in the Face of Extremism' at the KICC.

Prof Nazir's lecture brought together religious scholars from diverse faiths, and his portrayal of Islam's place in human affairs highlighted the nature and goodness of God as the ultimate giver of laws governing human beings.

He adopted a critical approach to Islam, emphasizing its role in both social and religious lives.

Prof Nazir's presentation served as a model for approaching matters of religion, as he correctly observed that the world's problems stem from religious extremism.

"All religions have doctrines that lead to a happy life and are in opposition to evil," Prof Nazir stated.

He emphasized the importance of moderation, citing the example of a Bedouin farmer who wanted to defile a mosque. Prophet Mohamed allowed the farmer to relieve himself at the side of the mosque, demonstrating the value of tolerance.

Prof Nazir also drew parallels between Islam and the Bible, highlighting Jesus Christ's encouragement of tolerance and his interactions with 'unclean' people, such as tax collectors and prostitutes.

He stated, "The Prophet Mohamed asked those who confessed to doing evil, including murders, to repent and God would forgive and cleanse them. The Bible teaches that if one repents and avoids doing evil, God will forgive their sins."

Prof Nazir's message of moderation and tolerance is essential for promoting peace and justice, and his approach should be incorporated into religious education to stem terrorism.
